Uncle Bobby held true to the Montrose Street tradition that the families on our block were connected as more than just neighbors. He didn’t live on the block while I was growing up as a close friend to his nephew Toby, but I knew him well from his frequent visits to Miss Louise’s house. When I enlisted in the Air Force, I didn’t know at the time that Uncle Bobby was working at the location where I took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude test used to decide my placement in an Air Force career field. After the test, I was at the desk of sergeant who had little interest in ensuring I was placed in the best job qualification reflected by my test scores. By the grace of God, Uncle Bobby walked by and recognized I was Jerry Hayes from Montrose street. He took over and helped me through the process that resulted in my selection of an electronics field that became the foundation for the rest of my successful 46 year working career. When finishing the paperwork, the original sergeant apologized and said that Sergeant Henderson made it clear that I was ‘family’ and deserved nothing less than the best treatment as I began my Air Force career. To this day I am thankful and grateful for the difference Uncle Bobby Henderson made in my life.
